Growing to Give × Blaine 7th Street Community Garden: Strengthening Local Food Systems 🌱

This collaboration brings innovative growing systems to Blaine, Washington—supporting community food production, sustainability, and local resilience in the Pacific Northwest.

Quick answer: Growing to Give and Blaine 7th Street Community Garden are partnering to improve food access and sustainability using advanced growing systems like Tomato Volcanoes in a community-driven garden setting.

About the Blaine Community Garden Project

Growing to Give (Washington) has partnered with the Blaine 7th Street Community Garden to enhance local food production through innovative, water-efficient growing systems designed for community-scale agriculture.

Definition: Community garden partnerships are collaborations between organizations and local communities to improve food access, education, and sustainability through shared growing spaces.

Located in the Pacific Northwest—one of the most productive gardening regions in North America—this project leverages fertile soils, a mild climate, and strong community engagement to support local food resilience.

Did you know? The Pacific Northwest’s long growing season and fertile soils make it ideal for producing vegetables, berries, and specialty crops throughout much of the year.

As part of this collaboration, Growing to Give is introducing Tomato Volcanoes—high-efficiency growing systems that improve airflow, conserve water and nutrients, and increase crop productivity in compact spaces.

Supported by a grant from the Whatcom Community Foundation, this initiative demonstrates how innovative agricultural technologies and community partnerships can work together to strengthen local food systems.

By combining hands-on gardening, sustainable practices, and community collaboration, the project helps expand access to fresh food while building long-term resilience at the neighborhood level.

Growing to Give will also provide training on the installation and use of the Tomato Volcanoes to ensure successful integration into the garden. Blaine 7th Street Community Garden will designate a section of their sunny garden space for these systems.

Project Goals and Impact

This initiative will unite community volunteers to cultivate and donate tomatoes and other fresh produce to the Blaine Food Bank. The addition of the Tomato Volcanoes will significantly increase the garden's yield using sustainable methods. This project aims to alleviate food insecurity in Blaine, promote environmental sustainability, and strengthen community bonds.

Blaine 7th Street Community Garden will manage the daily operations of the garden and the Tomato Volcanoes, including volunteer coordination, seasonal planting, maintenance, and harvesting. They will also oversee the distribution of produce to local food banks and track key impact metrics such as the amount of produce donated, event attendance, and volunteer participation.
